THE LYCEUM TAPES - a multimedia essay by David Dunnington.
Music recorded live at Lyceum Ballroom, London, 7th May 1980
(except One For The Vine: May 6), taken from
original master tapes courtesy of BBC London, except parts of Squonk and One For The Vine taken from NBC "The Source" Radio Show vinyl LPs provided by Alessandro Vasserot, One For The Vine (extra track) and spokenintroductions on the CD version and to The Knife on the DVD taken from May 7 single cam soundtrack provided by Adam Gottlob. All other spoken introductions on the DVD taken from May 6 bootleg soundtrack "Duke Revisited".Video sources (BBC): "Duke Revisited" (May 6, EFDVDDB01), "The Old Grey Whistle Test" (May 7, EFDVDG11), "Story Of Albert Day Two" (May 7 single cam, GMDVD 01) courtesy of EFDVD and Genesismuseum.com.Radio show introductions provided by David Dunnington and Peter Schueler, courtesy of GRaSP.Illustrations and animations: David Raphael, liner notes: David Dunnington,Video & audio editing, restoration, mixing, mastering, DVD authoring and artwork: tom.As the UK Duke tour drew to a close in May 1980, Genesis playedthree incredible concerts at London venues: 5th at theTheatre Royal, Drury Lane; 6th and 7th at the Lyceum. All three shows were recorded to 24 track audio tapes byGenesis, the masters now being archived at their Farm studios. Edited sets were supplied to the BBC and to Capital Radio for
broadcast. In addition, the two Lyceum dates were filmed bythe BBC. These master recordings together produced a slowtrickle of official bonus material and more significantly arich and interesting broadcast history, which naturally in
turn spawned a flood of highly popular bootleg releases. In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Duke tour, this product draws together the best available audiovisual
sources of the London concerts to convey the magic of thoselive shows. The primary audio source is a fresh BBC transferof their archive recording created for the December 1980rebroadcast and provided to the Genesis Radio Show Projectby a generous anonymous donor. Provision for the song One For The Vine which
suffers speed problems on the BBC master is via aTM productions 24 bit digital transfer of an original NBC"Source" LP. Song introductions are taken from the mono
video soundtracks, treated with simulated stereo. All iscarefully restored with trademark TM techniques and blendedseamlessly using 32 bit editing throughout.
With focus firmly on audio restoration, this neverthelessseemed an unmissable opportunity to merge the body ofvideo footage by way of additional bonus material. The
DVD uses scenes from the multicam filming of 6th whereveran acceptable sync could be maintained and then utilizesthe single cam from the 7th elsewhere. Exceptions are
of course made for those passages which could be bettercovered by the superior pre-broadcast OGWT edit and forRipples where video montage compilation techniques
were used in lieu of missing footage. The DVD featuresaudio which benefits from the full complement of detailedrestoration work but comes with the caveat that the
quality of the footage is limited to the best availablecopies, masters being inaccessible.
Taken as a whole the idea of this synthesis is torecreate the intensity, drama and jubilation of thosepeak performances on the Duke tour. With a little
concentration and perhaps some imagination, you will be transported back in time to experiencethe majesty of these awe inspiring concerts.
